Gynostemma, also known as 'Jiaogulan' and 'Longevity Tea', is a vine-like climbing plant belonging to the cucumber and gourd family that grows wildly in many countries throughout Asia. The plant was first used as food, and is now widely consumed as a tea. The leaves have a sweet, robust taste, allowing them to be used as a natural sweetener. The Gynostemma in this tincture is of premium quality, grown outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand. The farmers sing Tibetan Bon mantras through speakers to the plants as they grow. This gynostemma has won awards in Thailand for its flavour and strength.

It is an amazingly potent adaptogen, gynostemma contains many compounds including ginsenosides and gypenosides saponins, similar or identical to those compounds found in panax ginseng, but in significantly higher amounts.

These compounds have many regulatory effects on the various systems of the body, and it is a highly valued herb for longevity. Gynostemma gained popularity and renown in this regard, owing to a study done in a Chinese province which had a high percentile of centenarians (those living to 100 years old or more). The study found that in this province, the people regularly drank gynostemma tea instead of green tea. The study indicated that the consumption of gynostemma might have a considerable effect on the longevity of the people within that province. This may be due to the effect that gynostemma has on telomerase production in the body, which helps increase telomere length, and protect the chromosomes from damage and degradation due to oxidative stress.
